“The Search for Piety and Obedience” is the blog of the Brethren in Christ Historical Society. The title refers to the standard history of the Brethren in Christ Church, written in 1978 by Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger.

At this blog, our goal is to advance the mission of the Brethren in Christ Historical Society: to nurture understanding and appreciation of the historical, theological, and contemporary life and thought of the Brethren in Christ and related groups. Our posts will explore the history, theology, and identity of the Brethren in Christ—an evangelical Protestant community with roots in the Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Holiness traditions of the Christian Church. As Wittlinger’s seminal history contends, the Brethren in Christ have long embodied a “quest for piety and obedience,” and this blog seeks to discover how that group has succeeded—and failed—in that pursuit.

This blog also serves as a forum in which other scholars and writers studying this unique Protestant denomination (and related traditions) can engage in constructive dialogue about Brethren in Christ history and life.
