Marie Mutsuki Mockett’s newest book, American Harvest: God, Country and Farming in the Heartland (Graywolf, 2021), won the 2021 Northern Californian Book Award for General Nonfiction. Her memoir, Where the Dead Pause, and the Japanese Say Goodbye, was a finalist for the 2016 PEN Open Book Award. This article is slightly adapted from her presentation for the Annual Schrag Lecture at Messiah University in March 2022.
