“Various Christian bodies emphasize different parts of scripture. . . . From both our Anabaptist and Pietist roots, we [Brethren in Christ] come honestly by an emphasis upon the Gospels; that focuses us upon Jesus. . . . He is at the heart of our thought, life, and witness.”
—Owen H. Alderfer, twentieth-century Brethren in Christ minister, church leader, historian, and theologian, in a October 1985 newsletter article written while serving as bishop of the Central Conference (present-day Great Lakes Conference).
Also a great teacher with a generous open-minded spirit. He was an inspiration to many of us. Maybe that’s why I like the gospels so much.
